Fat Mussels served Thai-style at Martin Shanahan's Fishy Fishy seafood restaurant in Kinsale.

From the quality of the mussels, to the spicy Thai sauce, to the beautifully crafted bowl they are served in; everything about this bowl of mussels is top shelf. And so was the roasted cod, the monkfish in butter cream sauce and just about every...

Tender and delicious slow smoked Beef Ribs at Bad Boys BBQ in Cork.

Last January, I took a trip to Cork to sample some BBQ joints I had heard about. Two of the ones I tried were turning out some decent meats on Southern Pride stainless steel smokers. But Bad Boys BBQ at 30 MacCurtain St. had an honest-to-goodness "stick burner" -- a gian...

PJ's beer garden is a fine place to sample Carlingford oysters on a sunny day. I ordered two on the half shell, two grilled with garlic butter and breadcrumbs and two barbecued.

The half shell oysters were black-lipped and quite delicious, though they will taste much sweeter after a few months of cold weather.

The grilled oyster...

If you are interested in heritage Irish food, be sure to visit Limerick Milk Market on a Saturday morning. Joe Shea is the beekeeper at Mourne Grange, a Camphill Community in the Mourne Mountains of County Down.

A few days ago, I followed around while he checked the hives.

Joe Shea writes:

The Galway Oyster Festival, held on the last weekend in September every year, celebrates the beginning of oyster season.

The festival is held when the months without an "R" are behind us and the summer spawning is over. In the cold waters of Ireland, the oysters are beginning to fatten up already. I ate this lovely specimen at the Galway...

Can't stop talking about the housemade black pudding topped with foie gras and a sprinkling of pistachios I was served at Vaughan's Anchor Inn the other night. What an amazing combination of flavors and what a stunning dish to look at. The combination of blood sausage and duck liver has a Fergus Henderson sort of vibe about it...

"John Blake Dillion's Table" was the theme of the Burren Food Trail's "Long Table Dinner" on Thursday, July 19th. John Blake Dillion was an Irish revolutionary and part of the Young Ireland rebellion. Long Table Dinners are community dining experiences with a fascinating history in food, art and cinema. They have been embraced by the fo...

Linanne's Lobster Bar, Gregan's Castle, and most of the other classy joints in my neck of County Clare are featuring beers from a local microbrewery called Western Herd.

The beers come with such eccentric names as Blue Jumper IPA (inspired by an episode of Father Ted) and Siege Pale Ale (best enjoyed high in a Norman tower house wi...

The highest quality smoked salmon, rarely seen smoked wild tuna and smoked tuna mousse, smoked mackerel and smoked mackerel spread are a few of the items available to visitors at the headquarters of Connemara Smokehouse.  This is a highly recommended stopover on the Wild Atlantic Way.

As avid readers of this blog may remember, I sampled...
